Hi! I’m Renyi, a PhD candidate at the School of Journalism and Communication at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. My research interests are broad yet deeply interrelated, centering on digital citizenship and the intersections between nationalism and sexism. I am particularly passionate about challenging and deconstructing the biases embedded in the concepts and ideas we often take for granted.

My current research project delves into the concept of “network,” aiming to uncover the underlying biases and assumptions that inform its usage in both academic and public discourse. This project represents a significant step in my journey to question established narratives and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of how these concepts influence our perceptions and interactions within the digital and social realms.

Research Interests

01.

Digital Citizenship

Popular movements such as #MeToo and Black Lives Matter illustrate how marginalized communities assert their citizenship subjectivity via digital activism. It is essential to understand how these groups articulate their embodied experiences to validate their digital citizenship identity.

My research into digital citizenship focuses on examining this concept through a feminist lens, offering insights into these dynamics.

02.

Sexism

I am deeply interested in examining sexism, particularly subtle forms that often escape scrutiny. While misogyny and overt sexism are widely recognized, these subtle forms pose significant barriers to gender equality, being harder to identify and challenge.

My research delves into a specific subtle form of sexism, which I term "gender-equal sexism," highlighting its nuances and impact on efforts towards equality.

03.

Nationalism

Nationalism has been a major concern for Chinese intellectuals since the early 20th century, when China acknowledged its reduced global influence. Over time, nationalism became a crucial aspect of Chinese political and social culture.

I am particularly intrigued by how nationalism is politicized and weaponized, and how it intersects with sexism,  exploring how these dynamics interact and shape societal and political landscapes.

04.

Rock and Roll

Since childhood, I have been immersed in the world of rock and roll, which has deeply influenced my passion for this genre. This lifelong connection has naturally led me to pursue rock and roll as a central theme in my research endeavors.

I critically examine the so-called rebellious spirit of rock and roll, questioning its authenticity and impact. This perspective allows me to explore the complexities of its cultural narrative in my research.
